Skills in English - Vocabulary

AOAWW

The series is divided into 4 skills

Reading (R)
Listening (L)
Speaking (S)
Writing (W)

We are not using speaking this year. Instead we will be using something called Fifty-fifty.

Lets focus on Skills in English here

There are 3 levels in this series, starting with level 1. All of the books are linked by Themes. A Theme is a fancy name for a CHAPTER. However, each chapter deals with a special subject (or theme). If you were to open the first chapter (or theme) of the R,W and L books, you will find that all have the same Theme. Theme 1 is about Education, the 2nd Theme is about Daily Life and so forth. The Themes are repeated in levels 2 and 3.

There are 10 Themes in each book.

As students go through each skill, the subject matter is reinforced.

Each chapter has a list of red and green words. These are so-called key words. The mistake lecturers made in the past, was that they focussed on these words, and so if any other "unfamiliar word" appeared in the exam, the students would complain. Do not fall into this trap!!

Basically, there are many other words in all of the themes, and what you need to do (prior to each lesson) is to underline any words that you think may well count as new vocabulary. In fact you should encourage your students to underline any new words they come across as they go through the themes and then discuss these in class.

So even though there are 20 or so red and green key words, in reality there are probably 50 more. This last point is very important brothers and sisters. You students inshallah will have the edge if they are on top of their vocabulary.

I'll try and get some tips on any useful word games. I'd welcome your feedback.

Finally, there is a teacher's book which acts as a "guide". Do not follow it to the word. Try out your own things. We all have creative abilities, and the best teachers (in my humble opinion) are those who try out different things. How would you feel if you saw one of your students yawning? Is he/she not paying attention and lazy, or are they just plain bored!!
